Perk-Up with Emilie Sloan Totes, Bags & Accessories

30 Mar

Has the rain given you the blues? Are you anxious to go outside but afraid of your belongings getting too wet? Often living in Los Angeles prevents many of us from realizing how essential and beneficial the rain is. Many of us don’t leave our homes all day when it rains. However, rain plays a key role in the cycle of returning water back to our earth. And, we love our H2O!

Emilie Sloan can relate to your worries, she is a Seattle, Washington native and knows all about wet weather and staying dry. She produced a collection of bags and accessories that are perfect for our unpredictable weather. She incorporates and array of stylish printed bags that are made from rainproof fabric.  “The custom-designed cotton fabric goes through an extensive lamination process, resulting in a beautiful, rainproof, soft matte finish.”

There are so many collections to choose from you may want them all. Lately, I’ve been carrying around the Juliette Market Tote from the Cranberry Collection. The newest collection is Ravenna, which incorporates an Asian-inspired hot pink dahlia.  A compelling benefit of Emilie’s accessories is you can mix and match a variety pieces.

The top picks would be the Abbey Train Case in Icy Blue, the Paige Glam Roll in any collection and of course, the Juliette Market Tote because it’s a carry all and we all need a bag we can throw everything in and be sure its contents aren’t going to be damaged by the rain.

Edgy & Dark: I <3 Skingraft

30 Mar

Sunday March 13th at ACE Gallery on Wilshire at Concept LA Fashion Week was the location of Skingraft’s private press & media sneak peek at the dark, goth-luxe men’s and women’s collection. It was well represented by ebony shades, leathers, and feathers. The presentation encourages  fashion fans to get in touch with their inner sexy by exploring a more covered up ensemble that incorporates edgy pieces and a skin-tight silhouette. One model had feathers on her leather jacket and it was reminiscent of Natalie Portman’s costume in Black Swan.

Each model had a carefully crafted head-piece that resembles a skunk that added an animalistic persona to the garments. Ultimately, Skingraft is a fall fashion collection that everyone should have a piece in their closet from. It will transform and ordinary outfit in to an extraordinary skin hugging ensemble and allow the canvas to channel one’s inner rebel.

YSL S/S 2011 Campaign

First off, the American singer, songwriter, dancer, and performer, Janelle Monae is a remarkable new artist who has brought a new voice to music and at the same time Yves Saint Laurent is a fashion Mecca. When you combine YSL and Janelle Monae you get an ad that pops and breathes style. The YSL Spring/Summer haute 2011 collection is fresh and features the newest supermodel Arizona Muse who is gorgeous! The video, was filmed by Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin. The bags, the clothes and now the music is catchy, breathtaking, & gives a hefty dose Spring.

Spring into Fall with Whitney Eve Collection by Whitney Port

18 Mar
Whitney Port

Whitney Port @ Directives West LA 2011

Do you remember her from The Hills? We’re referring to Whitney Port, starlet of the MTV hit The City. Whitney Port opened the show at the third annual Directive West LA 2011 this past Monday with her eccentric new line Whitney Eve. It was a major success especially with its sunny southern California flair and sassy attitude.

Many of the garments had a triangular, checkered ethnic print on them that set the line apart from the others. Whitney also included a wrap around royal blue, sea-foam blue, navy and mint green dress, probably inspired from her job at Diane Von Furstenberg, coincidence, I think not. Many of her garments evoked a girly persona and are perfect for the Los Angeles market.

Overall, it was a delight to watch her designs come down the runway & like most, can’t wait to see more fashion from her.

Nathanaelle Couture Channels Jackie O at Skybar (Pictures)

17 Mar

March 15th, at Skybar in the Mondrian Hotel, French Tuesdays partnered with designer Nathanaelle to present her secondary couture line to LA’s attendees. The roof-top pool was the platform where the designs were presented to a semi-formally outfitted crowd. The assortment of suit-like pieces were channeling Jackie O and at the same time felt like a memorable trip down the early 60’s era and now & then the 20’s.

NATHANAELLE

One of my favorite looks was a body hugging white minky-dot fabric dress trimmed in black lace, falling right above the knee with a matching cropped coat. It was as you would expect elegant and had a tailored appeal. Another favored piece was a champagne colored simple cotton wrap-around dress also with lace fabric.

Several of the dresses were reminiscent of Gala attire or executive wear. The collection would especially appeal to women in search of a tailored look that would add a sense of professionalism to their wardrobe. The approving crowd applauded when the model entered the runway in the ‘wow’ piece from the collection, being a chiffon white long evening gown with embroidery around the chest. It easily stole the attention of everyone and left a virtuous impression.

Nathanaelle Couture presented garments that were both theatrical and practical with a very feminine touch. To think this was put together by a very talented 23 year-old is mind-blowing but then again she did design her first collection at the youthful age of 12.

Project Ethos Carpe Diem @LAFW: Seth Aaron Anderson

15 Mar

Carpe Diem was an exciting event put on by Project Ethos. It’s an extraordinary occasion where fashion, music, and art come together to support one another. Project Ethos is well known for putting on a good show, and this one was no exception.

Although the show did have its hour wait outside in the cold – it was well worth it. I even brought a partner in crime, (Creative Director, Recording Artist, and Choreographer). We entered the evening’s fashion platform and immediately saw all sorts of vendors sharing products like Carlton Hair who had Grace Zip (from the Beverly Center Salon) feathering (attaching feathers to hair) the attendees locks.  Also, Fredrick’s had gift bags for the lucky few who caught a beach ball during the fashion show.

The night may have been off to a rather cold and slow start (sigh), but the wait was worth it. The fashion portion of Carpe Diem introduced 7 emerging designers, including Project Runways Winner Seth Aaron Anderson. Vitaminwater zero™ supported the affair by offering the “Flavor Fashionista Challenge” which offered the designers an opportunity to win prizes up to $3,000 in value if they design the winning garment inspired by a vitaminwater zero™ flavor.   Each designer presented a new twist on fall fashion and had a unique way of approaching their projects.

Project Runway winner of season 7 Seth Aaron Anderson, debuted his never seen before ready to wear collection. He didn’t disappoint the crowd of over 2,000 with a wicked collection featuring high waist wide-leg paints, fitted cropped quilted jackets and dresses that fell right below the knee. The use of houndstooth fabric, as he had used on Project Runway, was evident in purple, black and red. The line was very complimenting of a woman’s physique and of course he stole the show!

Just in: LAVUK Fall 2011 Runway Presentation

14 Mar

Fashion is in the air in La La land and the new fall looks are being presented by many of Los Angeles’s very own talented designers. Each collection tells a story and presents a new angle on what’s hot for Fall 2011 fashion.

LAVUK Fall 2011 Colection

LAVUK Runway show @ ACE

On March 11th at the ACE Gallery, LAVUK’s collection by Natasha Gindin entitled Infinity was showcased. It was brilliant! Her line was full of bold color and futuristic silhouettes. “Colors range from Tibetan influences of power orange, deep purple, natural and old silver to a royal richness in old gold and deep navy.” Infinity included sharp lines that seem limitless. An art deco influence of long lines and symmetry with crisp angles could be easily appreciated.

Who would have guessed Natasha was nervous about her runway show? It was a very fluid collection but she adds, “I was very scared until everything was put together.” Truly, she had nothing to be afraid of because her work spoke for itself. The clothes were not only desired staples but wearable both in and out of the office. Natasha expressed,” My favorite piece is the purple coat!” I agreed as she continued to reveal her second love, the halter power orange mini-dress

Another amazing treat about LAVUK is its eco-friendly and made in Los Angeles! LAVUK clothing is sweatshop free and made with sustainable materials such as organic cotton, tencel, hemp and dead stock silks. The pieces are multi-functional, with subtle details that allow for alternate ways of styling each garment. LAVUK is committed to exceptional quality, and design our products to last a lifetime. For every LAVUK garment purchased, a tree is planted through American Forests as part of the California Wildfire ReLeaf program.

As our chat came to an end I asked the humble and so-talented Gindin how would she describe her line to potential buyers, fans and stylists, she replied, “Inner beauty, unusual and constructed looks from simple, comfortable materials.” Sounds like a winner to me.
